Our Vision

At Northfield St Nicholas we believe that education should prepare children not only for academic success but also for life beyond the classroom. Our Learning for Life Curriculum has been carefully designed to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that children need to become confident learners, responsible citizens and successful members of society.

On Friday afternoons from 2:00pm–3:00pm, pupils in Years 3–6 take part in mixed-age Learning for Life groups. This approach enables children to learn collaboratively, develop leadership skills, build relationships across year groups and experience working in teams with pupils of different ages and abilities.

The programme is designed to complement the National Curriculum by providing rich, practical experiences that encourage personal growth, resilience, independence and real-world application of learning.

Curriculum Structure

The Learning for Life Curriculum provides practical, engaging experiences that develop transferable skills and promote personal development. The program is organised into the following curriculum strands:

  • Sustainability
  • Financial Management
  • Local Community
  • Wellness & Health
  • Basic First Aid
  • Sewing skills
  • Cooking skills
  • Playmakers Leadership
  • Problem Solving skills
  • Disability Awareness

Assessment and Accreditation

A distinctive feature of the NSN Learning for Life Curriculum is its focus on recognising achievement and personal development. Each programme area is delivered over a six-week block, providing pupils with the opportunity to build knowledge, practise skills and demonstrate understanding through practical application. At the end of each six-week programme, pupils are assessed against clearly defined success criteria and awarded one of three levels of achievement:

Pass

Merit

Distinction

·       Participate positively in sessions.

·       Demonstrate understanding of key concepts.

·       Complete the required activities.

·       Show developing independence and responsibility.

·    Demonstrate high levels of engagement and commitment.

·    Apply learning confidently in a range of contexts.

·    Show initiative and collaboration.

·    Reflect thoughtfully on their progress.

·      Demonstrate exceptional commitment and enthusiasm.

·      Apply skills independently and consistently.

·      Lead and support others effectively.

·      Exceed programme expectations through the quality of their contribution and understanding.

Celebrating Personal Growth

The Pass, Merit and Distinction system recognises the development of the whole child. Success is measured not only by what pupils know but also by the characteristics they demonstrate, including Leadership, Teamwork, Resilience, Communication, Responsibility and Community Contribution.

Pupils will maintain a Learning for Life Portfolio where they collect evidence of their learning, reflections, achievements and accreditation outcomes. This portfolio will become a valuable record of their personal development throughout Key Stage 2.

Our Commitment

The Learning for Life Curriculum reflects Northfield St Nicholas’ commitment to educating the whole child. Through a carefully planned programme of practical experiences, leadership opportunities, community engagement and personal development, pupils are equipped with the essential skills, knowledge and values needed to flourish both now and in the future.

By bringing together our key strands, the NSN Learning for Life Curriculum ensures that every child leaves our school not only academically prepared for the next stage of education, but ready to make a positive contribution to society and thrive in an ever-changing world.
