Intent

Speaking is at the heart of every learning experience. We believe that the quality and variety of language children hear and speak are important for developing their vocabulary, grammar and understanding of reading and writing. At NSN, we aim to continually foster pupils’ confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills, in hopes to equip them to lead successful, fulfilling lives.

The golden thread of oracy is sewn throughout our whole curriculum. We teach children to respectfully discuss and explain their understanding using a range of sentence stems to develop their oracy skills. We also encourage children to listen respectfully and challenge opinions in a considerate way. Our weekly “No Outsiders” assemblies offer children the chance to discuss and share their ideas with their peers focused on a key text. These assemblies involve sharing a storybook, which are designed to encourage deeper thinking, where the children are encouraged to share their opinions using their “loud and clear voice”. These discussions are then followed up within class, where children can continue to discuss and share their ideas.
